A Working EnvironmentThere is mischief and fun all around the “Environment” that Les Lourigan has created at his modest ranch home in Wethersfield, the oldest Yankee town in Connecticut. Gather yourself for an environment our founding fathers never imagined. If your mind’s eye needs a workout, picture this: a treadmill slathered in concrete rests in the front lawn (a reproach to those who drive by and heckle); in back, a great wall resembling a ship’s bow is ornamented and bejeweled and ready for a Viking funeral. Tricycles hang chandelier-like from trees. Seals frolic among a forest of mushrooms and by the time you step through his door you will have been initiated into Les’ secret order and there you will be left to approach the mystery & wonder of Les Lourigan’s “Yankee-Aborginal” Art. Les is a must see for those who despise travel guides and love imagination. - David Graveen About the ArtistLES LOURIGAN is a self-taught artist who lives in Wethersfield, Connecticut. Here's what Les, who thinks he looks a lot like Rodin, has to say: I have fun at this art stuff and I want you to have fun with it, too. Play when you look at it. Look at it like a little kid. Don’t get serious and thoughtful about it, unless you want to and then have fun with THAT. I invite you to enjoy yourself as you look at my work. It’s meant to be a joyful thing and not something that gives you a headache trying to figure out what the artist is "trying to say"? I have been asked over and over again, ‘ What does it mean?’. It means what you want it to mean. What kind of art is it? Cubist or abstract or la-di-da-ist? I suppose if I had to call it anything, it would have to be outsider art. I don’t have a college degree and haven’t had any formal training. So that answers a couple of the most frequently asked questions. Another one is: How long does it take to draw or create one of your pieces? My standard answer is to quote Alexander Calder: When it’s time for lunch. I have been so fortunate in being able to create these pieces and that I have had such joy in their creation. I hope you are joyful as you look at them and take away a happy experience. - LES LOURIGAN What's up with Les and his names? Exhibits and Collections
